Power Women Group is a group of 15 women who came together to reduce the stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS. The group started in 2004 by saving Kshs.10 to create HIV/AIDS awareness pins to sell during World AIDS Day. Unfortunately, no one would purchase the pin because of discrimination and stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS. They were able to save some money that enabled them to conduct outreach programs within the Kibera community to change the thinking of people towards people living with HIV/AIDS
They currently run a beautiful Kibera shop selling jewellery, clothes, fabrics and many other souvenirs. They also teach tailoring to young mothers and conduct hairdressing courses.
As EKT, we have been proud partners with Power Women for over 15 years and our tours include a visit to their shop where we highlight their incredible stories, bring a stream of demand to their artwork and showcase the good work they do
Some of the volunteering opportunities available at Power Women Group include training in financial management, linkage to the market supply of their products, and training management of e-commerce among many other opportunities that might be available.
